Birmingham, Ala. – As physicians race to comply with the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), moving from paper to electronic health records, the personnel who manage doctors’ offices are becoming an increasingly critical component to the success of a practice. To ensure that employees charged with a smooth and complete transition to electronic health records are properly prepared and trained, Virginia College has teamed with EHS to create a curriculum aimed at meeting that need.
EHS is a Birmingham-based company who developed CareRevolution®, an electronic health record (EHR) software system that allows medical practices to run more effectively and profitably with a single, comprehensive "Point-of-Care" system.
The Virginia College EHR curriculum is a specialized educational path, utilizing EHS software, which is designed to streamline and simplify the physician’s back office functions such as scheduling, billing and record management. These curriculums are targeting those students in the health and medical fields and will prepare Virginia College graduates with specialized training that is needed for employment in related medical office fields.
“It was evident from the beginning that a synergy existed between the goals of Virginia College and EHS in regard to preparing for a day when all medical practices are paperless, “said Gavin Lawson Director of Market Development for EHS. “Virginia College’s goal is to provide their students the best opportunity to be successful in the marketplace upon graduation and exposing them to our industry leading technology will be a key component to achieving this goal.”
Students learn the basics of practice management and EHR systems, how the two interact, and most importantly, how to apply that knowledge to the day-to-day operation of a practice or clinic. Virginia College extends this educational program to include an externship for on-the-job training. There, students will be supervised by a physician, nurse, or health services professional and learn the billing and coding process from a true work perspective.
“Today there are more than six million people in allied health fields, working to deliver high-quality patient care services for the identification, prevention and treatment of diseases, disabilities and disorders,” said Dr. Richard Dormuth, SVP of Academic Affairs at Virginia College. “As we move forward, it is critical that this segment of the health care provider population is well-trained. Our partnership with EHS has created a curriculum that will allow students to enter the workforce prepared and ready to step into any work situation.”
There are currently 20 allied health programs offered at Virginia College with approximately 17,000 students enrolled at the college.
